About Brisbane Australia

Beautiful one day, and perfect the next, subtropical Brisbane with hot, moist summers and mild, dry winters is one of the best places in the world to live, work and play. Brisbane with over 2 million people is the contemporary urban capital of Queensland, the second largest State in Australia measuring more than 1.72 million square kilometres or 25% of the Australian landmass. Brisbane is the third largest city in Australia and is Australia's fastest growing city.

Brisbane residents enjoy an active yet relaxed way of life that fits perfectly with the Australian ideal of sun sand and surf. The downtown precinct, that includes the Queen Street Mall, offers almost a kilometre of Shopping Centres, malls and arcades and is the perfect place for shopping in Brisbane. On weekends, many Brisbane residents shop at downtown outdoor markets.

Brisbane is often referred to as Brisvegas because of the buzzing nightlife options, from bars and pubs to restaurants, nightclubs and live music venues. Brisbane has a strong cultural identity in art, sculpture, literature, poetry, music, live theatre, galleries, and museums. Guided walking tours of historical sites are popular with visitors to Brisbane. The old Treasury Building, an elegant Edwardian sandstone building in the Brisbane Government precinct, is now the Conrad Treasury Casino. The Brisbane River with graceful bridges and all manner of boats, ferries and watercraft, is the centre piece of the city and the focal point for the Central Business District.

Al fresco dining is a popular option offered by many restaurants and sidewalk cafes in downtown Brisbane and in the suburbs. There are many hinterland attractions with parks and wildlife within a leisurely 60-minute drive from downtown Brisbane. Sapphire blue Moreton Bay, at the mouth of the Brisbane River, has dozens of islands with white sand beaches that are prized for their camping opportunities. Brisbane is a popular holiday destination and is a good base for exploring Southern Queensland, the Gold Coast an hour away to the south and the Sunshine Coast an hour to the north.

Tourists and locals alike frequent the South Bank Parklands and the Riverside Walkway, which are located on the site of World Expo 88, to visit restaurants, watch firework displays, and to attend music and arts festivals. Annual events held in Brisbane are also drawcards for tourists and include the Ekka (the Royal Queensland Show) in August and the Riverfestival in September at South Bank Parklands and surrounding areas.

Tourism, information technology, financial services, higher education, public sector, petroleum refining, stevedoring, paper milling, metalworking and the QR railway workshops are major components of the Brisbane economy.

The Brisbane Airport, located north east of the city, is the biggest airport in Australia in terms of land size and is the third busiest in Australia.

Brisbane has a strong and proud tradition in sport, and is world famous for Rugby League State of Origin matches at Lang Park.
