About Dublin Ireland

Dublin is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Ireland and largest city on the island of Ireland.

Dublin is located near the midpoint of Ireland's east coast, at the mouth of the River Liffey where it enters the Irish Sea in Dublin Bay.

More than 500,000 people live within the City of Dublin while more than 1.6 million live within the Greater Dublin Area. Dublin has about a third of the total population of Ireland. The city of Dublin is one of the most youthful in the world and an estimated 50% of inhabitants are less than 25 years of age. Dublin is a city for walkers, talkers and a city where the people are as fun to watch as the architecture.

The national parliament of the Republic of Ireland consists of the President of Ireland and two houses, Dáil Éireann (House of Representatives) and Seanad Éireann (Senate), all of which are based in Dublin.

Dublin enjoys a maritime temperate climate characterised by mild winters, cool summers, and a lack of temperature extremes. Dublin has up to 19 hours of summertime daylight and short winter days with as little as 9 hours of daylight and like the rest of Ireland is safe from tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tidal waves and other natural disasters.

The city of Dublin is at the centre of Ireland's transport system with Dublin Port being the country's most important seaport and Dublin Airport being the busiest airport. Dublin is also the main hub of the country's road network.

Dublin is internationally recognised for its high-tech industrial estates, business centres and financial centres that have led it to be known as the "Silicon Valley of Europe". Guinness has been brewed at the St. James's Gate Brewery in Dublin since 1759. Dublin is the major cultural centre in Ireland and the origin of many prominent artists and writers such as James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, Samuel Beckett, George Bernard Shaw, and others. The National Print Museum of Ireland, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, and the National Museum of Ireland are located in Dublin. Dublin is also host to the National Gallery ,the National Library of Ireland, the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery, and the Chester Beatty Library.

Dublin is the primary centre of education in Ireland, with three universities and several other higher education institutions. The University of Dublin is the oldest university in Ireland dating from the 16th century.

Pubs are an integral part of life in Dublin where a diverse cross-section of society gathers to converse and to drink the famed dark local stout, Guinness. The streets of Dublin are full of talented buskers and Grafton Street on a Saturday afternoon is virtually impassable for the crowds surrounding the young musicians. Dublin offers visitors an unending wealth of entertaining things to do including cinemas, theatres, pubs, clubs and live events. One of the most attractive features of Dublin nightlife is the music and singing pubs. The Temple Bar area south of the Liffey in Dublin offers the most vibrant nightlife, particularly for stag and hen parties and tourists.
